For incredible views, trek through the tropical forests of Portobelo National Park to the impressive 17th century Fort San Lorenzo, which was overtaken by Henry Morgan’s pirates. Visit the town of La Guaira to fuel your senses with traditional dishes, artwork from local artisans, Calypso music and Congo dances. And be sure to check out the Agua Clara Visitor’s Center before you cruise to get a close look at the inner workings of the Panama Canal considered an engineering marvel.

When you cruise out of Cartagena de Indias it’s worth taking a few days to explore its beautiful beaches, colorful architecture and a lively culture as enchanting as the city itself. After you cruise, take a day trip to Playa Blanca — considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Colombia — and enjoy delicious local dishes like fresh fish, coconut rice and arepa de huevo. Or catch scenic views from the Plaza de Bolivar at the heart of the historical sector and weave through the underground passages of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. And remember, a vacation from Cartagena is not complete without dancing to the tropical rhythms of cumbia. Hop on a multicolored chiva (party bus) or mingle with locals at upbeat bars around the city.

The cruise might have ended, but there are still some great activities to enjoy in the area. If you flew into this port, be mindful of your departure flight time and plan accordingly.
