Amazing Experience

Overview

Trip Overview

This 4-day Ghana vacation takes you to the capital, Accra, and to Shai Hills Game Reserve and Aburi on a day trip. It features deluxe accommodations and private tours.

Your journey to Ghana showcases the capital, Accra, the largest city in the country, which sits along the Gulf of Guinea. This busy capital is defined by the history of the nation’s independence and its place within the colonial roots of Ghana as well as its lively present. A full day city tour will trace the history of independence and introduce you to some of its busiest markets and thoroughfares. Start at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to the first president of the nation. Continue to the W.E.B. Dubois Centre for Pan African Culture, where the famous Civil Rights activist was buried, before reaching Independence Square, where the Black Star monument immortalizes the nation’s independence from European powers. At the Arts Centre, you can get your first taste for bartering as you shop for local arts and crafts before reaching Osu-Oxford Street, perhaps the busiest street in the nation, which brims with bars, shops, and restaurants. If you have time, close the day in Jamestown, a low-rent neighbourhood that has some of the loveliest colonial buildings of the city as well as the distinct red lighthouse that sits on the gulf.

Another day, head out of Accra to search for bushbucks, baboons, and crested eagles on a bush walk through Shai Hills Game Reserve. Afterwards, visit the caves of Se Yo and Obonu Tem, where the Shai people defended themselves against incursions, before reaching the town of Aburi, where you’ll stroll alongside endemic plants and butterflies at the Aburi Botanical Gardens.

At the end of your stay in Accra, you’ll connect to the airport to return home or continue to your next destination.

Today you depart from Accra at 8:00 AM, prepare for a scenic drive to the Eastern region, where you’ll visit the Cedi Bead Factory. Beads hold immense significance in the life and culture of the Krobo people of Ghana. They serve as markers of family status, commemorate special occasions, and play a vital role in the important rites of passage for girls transitioning into puberty, known as the “Dipo”. During your visit, you’ll explore the factory, witnessing the meticulous process of crafting beads by hand in traditional batches. Additionally, take the opportunity to visit the market and acquire some of these exquisite beads. Return to your hotel in Accra at 5:00PM.

Embark on an exciting adventure as you leave your hotel at the early hour of 7:00 AM. Next, visit the Shai Hills Game Reserve, which seamlessly combines nature conservation, rich cultural interest, and archaeological sites, all set against a backdrop of splendid scenic beauty. During your trek through the savannah plains, you might be fortunate enough to encounter some of West Africa's notable game: antelope, bushbucks, kobs, baboons, monkeys, and a variety of bird species, including the crested eagle. Explore the Obonu Tem and Se Yo caves, which serve as home to many animals, including a colony of bats. The bravest among your group will also have the opportunity to venture deep into the caves, following the sun's path and emerging at the peak of the hill! These caves were once the ancestral home of the Shai people and were used by their king until the late 19th century. The area's defensibility during times of war was attributed to the large stone rocks, overhangs, and tunnel-like cave openings. Don't miss the chance to learn about the various artifacts discovered on this site. Moving on, the Aburi Botanical Gardens, established in 1890 for both pleasure and scientific research, provides a habitat for plants and butterflies from around the world. Located in the town of Aburi, which boasts an interesting history, beautiful surroundings, and friendly locals, the gardens have become even more accessible with the recent addition of rental bicycles for mountain tours. After your exploration, depart from Aburi and return to Accra by 5:00 PM
