Amazing Experience

Overview

Trip Overview

Bypassed by too many visitors to Brazil or Argentina, Uruguay is where many Brazilians and Argentinos go to play. This 6 day round trip from Buenos Aires visits both the colonial and modern sides of this underrated country.

Colonia stands alone as the only Portuguese settlement along the Rio de la Plata. Its UNESCO World Heritage listed town centre is small but beautiful, boasting a thriving café and outdoor dining culture. Or enjoy the view from the old lighthouse to put this charming town into perspective.

Montevideo is a modern, yet unhurried capital city that may at first feel like a more intimate version of its bustling Argentine counterpart. Your half-day tour explores the Old City, Constitution Square, and the Museum of the Presidents, with the option of visiting the impressive Congress Building. Two days at leisure here give you plenty of time to explore before returning by ferry to Buenos Aires.

Radisson Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia is steeped in history. It was the only Portuguese settlement along the Rio de la Plata. Founded as Nova Colonia do Sacramento in 1680 by Manuel de Lobo, and as such was the focus of struggle between the Spanish, who founded the settlement at Montevideo in response, and the Portuguese over control of the area. For years it operated as a contraband port, evading the strictures imposed on trade by the Spanish crown. Today it is a resort city, a port, and the trade center for a rich agricultural region. Today is spent on a half day city tour exploring this beautiful port city. Built in Portuguese style of houses and cobble stoned streets, the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Winding streets and colorful houses are laid out in a pattern different from Spanish colonial cities, and a delight to explore. The historic quarter, Barrio Historico, on a small peninsula jutting out into the river, was named a UNESCO heritage site in 1995.
