Amazing Experience

Overview

Trip Overview

This 7-day Peru vacation takes you to the capital Lima for two nights before you connect to Iquitos to explore the Amazon rainforest in the Pacaya Samira National Reserve. It features deluxe accommodations and a mix of private and shared tours.

Your trip to Peru begins in Lima, the Peruvian capital, and its political and culinary centre. Get a taste for both elements of the city on a day of tours. Start with a private city tour in and around the Plaza de Armas, the administrative centre of the city where you'll find the presidential palace as well as main cathedral and the religious landmark of the Convent of Santo Domingo. Cap off the tour at the Larco Musuem, home to a world-famous collection of pre-Columbian art. That evening, get to know Lima’s food and drink scene with a tour through some of the city’s trendy taverns and bars.

Connect from Lima to Iquitos to continue your trip to Peru in the nation’s north. Head to Nauta to board the Delfin III, which takes you one step beyond luxury with its intimate luxury cabins, relaxing open-air observation deck, and dining room serving the best in Amazonian and Peruvian cuisine. Aboard the Delfin III, you’ll explore the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest rainforest and the home to billions of organisms spanning from the heights of the tree canopy to the depths of the river floor.

Head into the Pacaya Samira National Reserve, the world’s largest protected flood forest, for two full days of excursions within the Amazon. Hike into the jungle and search for red howler monkeys, listening for their distinctive call, or swim alongside grey and pink river dolphins in a calm inland tributary. See all manner of water birds at Atun Poza, including species of herons and egrets. Track the beautiful Morpho butterfly to glimpse its startling blue wings or sit back on deck and enjoy the site of macaws and monkeys in the riverside canopy. On the final morning of your visit, you’ll head to a local Indigenous village to meet with people who live and work deep within the forest. Then swing by the Manatee Rescue Center on the way back to Iquitos, where you’ll connect back to Lima for one final night.

At the end of your vacation in Peru, connect to the airport for onward travels.

Today you will learn about the two characters of Lima: the modern one, reflected in the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, and the historic one, encapsulated in the city center, which was declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Along the tour through different districts of the city, you will see how the old and the modern coexist in buildings such as the Museum of Italian Art, Palace of Justice, Museum of Lima, Plaza San Martín, among others. With your private guide leading the way, you'll explore the center of Lima on foot, with the Main Square as the focal point: a beautiful colonial square worthy of photographs, surrounded by emblematic buildings such as the Government Palace, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. You will also have the opportunity to enter one of the most iconic ecclesiastical spaces in Lima, the Convent of Santo Domingo, also declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and where the relics of three Peruvian saints are found: Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martín de Porres and San Juan Macías. Dawn and dusk are ideal times for nature observation and an early rise is therefore highly recommended.

Aboard the skiffs, you will explore this black water stream and start learning about the rainforest. You are now in Pacaya Samiria national reserve, where you will have the chance to see its amazing wildlife. From the skiff you can easily spot parrots, macaws and monkeys, such as the Monk Saki monkey with its gray and black body, naked face and long shaggy tail. You might also see the saddle back tamarin monkey, whose high chirping notes can easily be confused with those of a flock of birds. It is also a good spot to see the beautiful Morpho butterfly that flaps lazily along open corridors through forest or along river edges of lowland forest on sunny days. Different species of hawks will also be found and if you are lucky, you will see the noisy 'laughing falcon,' named after its loud falsetto call while sitting solitary in secondary forest and plantations.

Return to the Delfin in time to enjoy a world-class gourmet meal as the vessel continues sailing upstream. The innovative chef will surprise your palate, while introducing you to the pleasures of Peru's haute cuisine. The menu features fresh fish and other local delicacies, all prepared with an Amazonian flair.

In the afternoon, head for a spectacular spot within the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve aboard the skiffs. You will have an unforgettable encounter with gray and pink river dolphins. Enjoy a unique opportunity to swim among the dolphins. On the river you will experience abundant wildlife and nature in all its exuberance while searching for the Amazon River's transitional forest specialties such as snail kites, festive parrots, endangered scarlet macaws, olive spotted hummingbirds, Amazonian parrotlets, and wood creepers, among others. Prehistoric looking iguanas laze in the sun while you travel along the shoreline searching for whatever the jungle has to offer. Squirrel Monkeys are very active at this time of the day, when they move in large noisy troops at mid- to upper-levels of primary and secondary lowland forest.

Return to the Delfin in the early evening for dinner and some time to relax.
