This 6-day round trip from Edinburgh takes you to Islay, the southernmost island of the Hebrides.
Spend a night in Edinburgh, perhaps adding a few extra nights if it’s your first time in the Scottish capital. Then travel west though Loch Lomond National Park to Oban, where you can sample a drop at the local distillery. A ferry takes you to Islay, and the journey is sometimes accompanied by local wildlife such as dolphins, seabirds, or even whales.
Your itinerary on the island will vary according to your interests, but there is plenty to choose from. You’ll have the option of visiting Kilchoman and Bowman Distilleries for a tasting or roaming the beaches and harbour villages, keeping your eyes peeled for seals. Your second full day on the island takes you to its southern side, where many of the stronger, more famous whiskeys are produced, including Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Your visit to Ardbeg includes lunch, a tasting, and a tour. Of course, it’s not all about whiskey. Visit ruined Kildalton church, or the craft producers of Islay House Square.
Return to the mainland for lunch at Kilmartin Glen. The town is surrounded by prehistoric monuments and stone circles, allowing you to immerse yourself in Celtic history on your way back to Edinburgh, via the Lochs Fyne and Lomond.
