Tradition, craft, historic hardship, joy, spirituality, and celebration all come together to define today’s Ghana. Reconnect with one of West Africa’s most fascinating countries on this 9-day group trip from Accra, packed with local encounters and stories that shape Ghana today.
Begin in Accra, exploring the country’s most important museums and monuments to get a sense of Ghana’s history and culture. The tour ends at the Arts Centre where you can bargain for exquisite local goods from throughout West Africa. Visit Torgorme Village on the Volta River, meet the chief, and participate in a naming ceremony, where each participant receives a Ghanaian identity. Visit a bead factory and learn how these beautiful items are made. You can even make your own to take home.
Ghana’s wilderness is one of its often-unsung treasures. Take a canopy walk through the rainforest, watching for colorful birds and other beautiful flora and fauna, or bring things closer to the ground, whichever walk you’d prefer. After lunch, embark on the sobering chapter of your visit, to the Slave Forts of Ghana. Cape Coast Castle has a disturbing yet fascinating history as one of the key sites of the trans-Atlantic slave trade that left devastating scars on West Africa. It’s not an easy visit, but one essential to understanding the slave trade and its impacts.
West African cuisine offers a range of surprise discoveries, all waiting for you at a local cooking class. Prepare and enjoy your creations using fresh local ingredients authentic to West African cooking. After lunch, steel yourself for St George’s Castle, another slave fort, today surrounded by the picturesque fishing village of Elmina.
Go on to Kumasi and immerse yourself in the legacy of the Ashanti Empire. One of West Africa’s most influential kingdoms, the Ashanti story is told at Manhyia Palace Museum, and on the local streets. The following day, see Ashanti culture preserved in exquisite crafts such as woodcarving, Adinkra cloth, and Kente weaving. Best of all, you’ll be able to buy (should you wish) directly from local artisans. Visit the Besease Shrine the following day for a taste of West Africa’s unique spiritual tradition. Learn about ancestral worship and the ancient spirits and gods that defined local beliefs.
On your last day in Ghana, return to Accra, you’ll have the option to visit a school for the deaf, or a local hair salon to learn how to create the latest West African styles through the art of hair wrapping. A farewell dinner completes your group’s journey before you depart.
