Trip Overview

This 5-day Italian vacation takes you to Taormina in Sicily to discover Sicilian food and wine. It features deluxe accommodations and small group tours. 

Your journey takes you to Sicily and the commune of Taormina located on the slopes of Mt. Etna in the municipality of Messina. Based in Taormina, you’ll have several days to delve into Sicily’s centuries-old food and wine traditions. A small group tour will take you to the Porta Messina area and down the city’s main walking street Corso Umberto to the Piazza Aprile to discover local restaurants and bars, tasting wine, pastries, and traditional fish dishes along the way. Another day, join a professional chef for a Sicilian cooking class. Start with a visit to an open-air market to pick out choice ingredients. Then head to the chef’s restaurant to help make fresh bread and pasta, sampling your savoury creations at lesson’s end. You’ll delve further into the culinary traditions of the region with a journey up Mt. Etna. Learn about the area’s agricultural history of oranges, lemons, olives, and almonds. Stop by a local winery on the slopes of the volcano for a wine tasting, complete with snacks of bruschetta, salami, and dried tomatoes. Then continue to a local farm for a bountiful lunch of grilled vegetables and Sicilian pasta. Cap off the tour with a liquor tasting. 

At the end of your tour, connect back to the Catania Airport to continue to your next destination or return home.

Taormina Food and Wine Walking Tour

On this small-group excursion, you will take an evening stroll with a professional guide and discover traditional Sicilian restaurants, delicious cuisine, and local wine. The best local chefs will prepare their masterpieces for you! Start this tour near the ancient Porta Messina gate at a typical bar and restaurant. The Porta Messina is an arched stone gateway. It's also where you can start strolling down Corso Umberto, the main walking street, and reach the viewpoint square of Piazza Aprile midway. Porta Messina is one among 2 of the once fortified town's portals, the other being Porta Catania that's around 800 meters on the southwestern end of the Corso. From Porta Messina, your tour continues to the best food spots serving pastries, wines, and family fish trattorias. Your local guide will also introduce you to exceptional local wines and explain the production process and share interesting facts and stories.

Taormina Cooking Class

In this unique small group excursion with a professional chef, start with a walking tour to an open-air typical market of Taormina, and then learn how to cook traditional Sicilian cuisine! During the visit to the market, you will discover various vendors selling local fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Then, head to a restaurant where you will receive an apron for your cooking class. Your professional chef will share the history of Sicilian wheat, flours, and Sicilian cooking traditions. Together with the chef and the restaurant staff, you will cook some of the typical dishes of the Sicilian tradition such as fresh bread and pasta. Enjoy your bread with extra virgin olive oil and local cheeses and cured hams. Your lesson will be followed by a lunch to enjoy the dishes prepared from the attendees. At the end of the course, you will receive a diploma signed by the chef.

Food and Wine Lovers - Etna Landscapes

Enjoy a unique small group experience of a visit to the Mount Etna region and a taste of local Sicilian fare. With a professional guide, you will learn interesting facts about Sicily's rich culture, traditions, art and cuisines. Foods such as oranges, lemon, almonds and olive trees are just a few examples of local regional agriculture. Located on the slopes of Mount Etna (1000 meters), you will visit a local winery and enjoy a tasting of local Etna wine along with various regional dishes such as cold appetizers, dried tomatoes, olive oil, bruschetta and salami. You can admire the Etna landscape. The culinary journey continues to a local farm where you will enjoy a gourmet menu consisting of local Etna wine, grilled vegetables, Sicilian pasta with pistachio, asparagus, black port sauce and a delicious ricotta cheese with marmalade. The island is famous not only for its wines but for liquors as well. Your final stop will be a tasting of these unique liquors.
