This 8-day trip through Croatia takes you to the country’s essential sights, offering the flexibility of your own vehicle to reach those out-of-the-way spots on the magnificent Dalmatian Coast.
Begin in Zagreb, which might just be the most underrated capital city in Europe. Too many travellers bypass it on their way to the beautiful coastal cities. But Zagreb is the cultural heart of today’s Croatia, so consider arriving a day or two early for a city break away from tourist crowds. One night here is included, after which you’ll pick up your hire car and head from the Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage site and almost certainly Croatia’s most beautiful inland landscape.
After a night surrounded by such incredible scenery, it’s on to the Dalmatian Coast. Begin with two nights in Split, home to the awesome Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century AD. You’ll enjoy a full day to explore Split your way, with no scheduled activities. The palace is a must see, but you might also consider exploring the Split Archaeological Museum, taking a dip at local favourite, Bacvice Beach, or simply people watching in one of the many city squares.
After Split, it’s on to Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic and Croatia’s most famous city, where you’ll drop off your hire car. While the word might be well and truly out, Dubrovnik’s popularity won’t spoil your enjoyment as you explore its famed city walls, or delve into the stories contained within the ancient laneways of its old town. As in Split, your time is at leisure. Booking a walking tour will help put your discoveries into context, but since you have a full extra day here, consider a day trip either to one of Croatia’s islands, to Montenegro’s beautiful Bay of Kotor, or across the border to the beautiful Bosnian city of Mostar.
