Overview

Trip Overview

Copenhagen, Denmark’s vibrant and lively capital is a fairly compact city and has a strong character reflected in its architecture and criss-crossing canals and harbour. Check into your hotel on arrival for a 4 night stay.

Your next morning brings a tour of the city including the impressive Amalienborg Palace, built in the 1700’s, and home of the Royal Family. Something to watch is the Changing of the Guard which marches from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Castle every day. Also see the iconic Little Mermaid, a bronze and granite statue displayed in the middle of the harbour and the modern Royal Danish Opera House. This is followed by a canal cruise which criss-crosses through a network of canals and includes the colourful neighbourhoods of Christianshavn and Fredericksholm.

The following day experiencing Copenhagen through its food while listening to stories about its history and daily life. The remainder of the day is free to explore the city on your own.

Next is a tour to the city of Malmo in Sweden. You will cross the amazing Oresund Bridge which connects Denmark and Sweden. On arrival in Malmo, your guide will brief you on what to see and do and then you are free to explore the city. Perhaps start in the Stora Torget or the Lilla Torget, the principal squares in the centre of the city with their shops and restaurants. Also consider a visit to the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art. Later, you will join a boat tour through the canals in the Rundan area of Malmo. Return afterwards to Copenhagen.

Departing on a private first-class vehicle, together with a local authorised guide, the tour starts with a drive out of Copenhagen, heading west to the town of Roskilde. First stop is the ancient Roskilde Cathedral where the Kings and Queens of Denmark have been crowned for hundreds of years and are entombed. The Cathedral on the ridge in the very heart of Roskilde is an extremely prominent feature in the town and the local landscape. There has been a church on this spot for more than a thousand years. In 1995, UNESCO added the Cathedral to its list of the world’s most precious cultural assets. It is one of the earliest examples of French-inspired, Gothic brick architecture, and the whole site exhibits a beautifully, harmonious unity. After the Cathedral, the tour includes a visit to the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. The Viking Ship Museum offers a unique opportunity to experience Viking ships, the Viking Age, and life at sea. Five original 11th-century Viking ships, excavated from Roskilde Fjord in 1962, are on display in the Viking Ship Hall. The hall also houses an exhibition describing – hour by hour – a sea-borne assault on Roskilde by Vikings from Norway. Return trip back and end of visit.
