This 5-day German self-drive takes you through the Black Forest and into Alsace in France. It’s perfect for travellers who want to journey at their own pace.

Your trip to Germany and France begins in Frankfurt, where you’ll connect to Baden-Baden, the former hotbed of European royalty that’s known for its hot springs. After taking a dip for yourself, pick up your rental car and journey into the Black Forest, the enchanting landscape of evergreen trees and charming villages that defines southwestern Germany. Drive through the villages of Baiersbronn, Freudenstadt, and Alpirsbach before returning to Baden-Baden and continuing to Titisee, a picturesque lake in the midst of the forest. Stroll along the banks of the lake and continue to Hofgut Sternen to learn about the construction of cuckoo clocks before reaching Freiburg, known for its gorgeous church tower that looks like something out of a fairy tale.

From Freiburg, drive over the border into France and journey to Colmar and Strasbourg in the Franco-German region of Alsace. Head on a sightseeing tour to see the stunning Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral and experience the city’s famous blend of French and German influences. Drive back into Germany and reach Heidelberg, the country’s oldest university town and home to one of the largest pedestrian areas in all of Germany. Tour Heidelberg Castle and stroll through the old town to admire the city’s medieval architecture before reaching Frankfurt to return your rental car and close out your German vacation.

In the morning travel to the city of Baden-Baden, the former summer residence of European aristocrats and world famous for its elegant spa resort. Another attraction is the casino, at the entrance of the Black Forest. Visit the city and surrounding region.

Today travel deeper into the Black Forest. Your route takes you through traditional villages such as Baiersbronn, Freudenstadt and Alpirsbach, set among the scenic hills and woods of the Black Forest. In the afternoon return to Baden-Baden where you have free time to enjoy the city's hot springs or try your luck at the casino.

After breakfast travel towards the southern part of the Black Forest, taking the high route through the Black Forest. Stop at Vogtsbauernhof; this open-air museum gives a great overview of the way of life in this region. Then arrive at Titisee, the glacial lake nestled in the heart of the Black Forest. Make a brief stop at Hofgut Sternen to learn more about the fascinating world of cuckoo clocks. In the afternoon continue to Freiburg. Sightseeing tour of the city.

The Rhine River forms the natural border between Germany and France. After crossing the river arrive in Colmar. This city is known for its outstanding wines and architectural heritage that reflect the long history of this region and the German and French influences. Continue to Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace. Sightseeing tour of the city.

In the morning travel to Heidelberg and visit its famous castle. The lovely city of Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university town and one of the most popular destinations in the country. In the afternoon arrive in Frankfurt. Transfer to the airport or your hotel.
