Liverpool, England has a proud 800 years of history behind it, with a rich and varied cultural scene, even if you — somehow! — ignore what happened there 60-ish years ago. Yes, this is where the biggest rock band of all time got their start, and the city where you’ll still find the actual Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. But before the lads and their contemporaries made the local “Merseybeat” sound world-famous, Liverpool was already home to Europe’s original communities of Black and Chinese folks, the UK’s longest-running symphony, World Heritage Site Royal Albert Dock… not to mention a pair of ancient cathedrals that includes the UK’s largest. Venture elsewhere in the Liverpool Bay region and you’ll find sights like the glacier-formed Windermere Lake (England's longest), the meticulously-preserved city of Chester with its ancient walls, plus the first King Edward’s Conwy Castle, straight out of the 1280s.
7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
You’ll find the town of Holyhead at the nation of Wales’ northwesternmost tip, and in one of the most dramatic lighthouse scenes available anywhere, the landmass practically points across the sea towards Ireland. Holyhead today is scenic, but actually began as strategic — the city center you can still explore was originally the site of a Roman fort. Beyond Holyhead itself lies so much Welsh beauty across the Anglesey region: verdant hills, imposing castles, historic railways, neighboring villages and more. Plus don’t miss the local arts center or the charming pubs!
7:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Enjoy a day in emerald Ireland’s buzzing capital city of Dublin, where there’s always a song to sing, a joke to tell, and a pint to sink. Your Carnival cruise will take you to Dún Laoghaire, a buzzing town nearby with beautiful seaside views. From there it’s a short ride to laid-back yet lively Dublin, crammed with a history of revolutionaries and literary heroes that dates back at least a millennium and a half. Since the city sustained Gaelic, Viking, Norman, and English invasions during all this time, you can see the influences of all these cultures. Immerse yourself in this storied past as you stroll through Georgian terraces on Merrion Square, near Ireland’s National Gallery, where Picasso paintings compete with Jack Yeats’ Irish landscapes. Browse for local cheeses and organic wines at the Temple Bar market or enjoy some lounging on the lush St. Stephen’s Green.
