8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Australia’s famous city isn’t the only Sydney worth cruising to! While exploring Canada & New England on a Carnival cruise, you can dig deeper into a pocket of Canadian history, a city that was actually founded in the late 18th century by loyalist British soldiers retreating from the American Revolution. Robust industries fueled by the region’s natural resources sprang up, leading to the place you’ll enjoy exploring today. Start at the harbor — you can’t miss it because of the huge fiddle! It’s the world’s largest and hints at the live music (sea shanties, anyone?) you might experience while dining at the waterfront restaurants enjoying freshly-caught seafood. There’s actual history to explore here, with the entire Fortress of Louisbourg having been painstakingly recreated from its original rubble to showcase a pivotal location from the Seven Years’ War. Alexander Graham Bell’s house is another shouldn’t-miss for fans of the inventive spirit that spurred modern communications as we know it.

8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Those mountains you’ll see making up the backdrop of Corner Brook, Newfoundland? That’s actually the Appalachian… yep, an extension of the ones you’ll find down in the US! It was the famous Captain James Cook who helped put this beautiful region of Canada on the map in the 18th century, though hundreds of years later this fishing village also became notable as one of the largest paper processing mills anywhere in the world. But none of the city’s modern-day industrial success detracts from the all the green you’ll find around here — nature has so many ways to impress and be enjoyed with various parks and trails, while the downtown area offers great shopping, sipping and dining.

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Here’s a Newfoundland travel tip: DO visit St. Anthony, but DON’T miss the whale-watching. Got all that? After all, there’s a reason these incredible creatures are among the top draws to this town, which you’ll find situated at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. On land there’s even more wildlife that brings in the people and keeps their cameras busy… we’re talking ones like polar bears and the largest moose population almost anywhere. But let’s also talk humans for a second: there used to be real Vikings here, hundreds of years before European explorers got around to “discovering” the continent. Today, you can see how the Vikings lived at reconstructed sod-construction houses at the 11th-century village of L’Anse aux Meadows, not far from St. Anthony. Speaking of legendary, you’ll want to find out why the 19th-century Dr. Grenfell continues to be remembered as such an important figure among the local community.

7:00 AM - 6:00 PM

You'll find about 8% of the entire world's ice in Greenland, but surprisingly, not all of the country resembles the large ice cube you might be expecting. Qaqortoq is actually rather green by Greenland standards, and you'll find it situated at the southern tip of the island, not too far from Canada. While there, you'll enjoy a port that has buildings and landmarks dating back to the town's founding in the 18th century, though today it's best characterized by its hot springs, wildlife and Inuit culture.

Note: Itineraries to this port are subject to favorable weather and ice conditions.

  • Explore on your own and immerse yourself in the Inuit way of life.
  • Visit the local museum housed in the town’s oldest building, constructed in 1804.
  • Discover Stone and Man, an open air gallery with over 30 different carvings created by local Nordic artists.
  • Venture to the ruins of Hvalsey Church, dating back to the Viking period.

greenland tundra rocks and mountains

7:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Someplace has to hold the title of Greenland’s southernmost town… and it just happens to be Nanortalik. This means that, at least by Greenland standards, the climate is pretty mild. (But still pack a jacket in the summer!) Polar bears have traditionally liked it here too, which is actually where the name came from. This home to about 1,000 — people, that is — welcomes visitors with its incredible natural sights like magnificent fjords, aquatic wildlife and Greenland’s only forest. Humans have been a part of the history here dating back to the times of Vikings and Inuits, and remnants of these civilizations can still be explored today, while the Nanortalik Museum provides another look at local history with examples of historic buildings to tour.

Note: Itineraries to this port are subject to favorable weather and ice conditions.
