Overview

Trip Overview

Tunisia is both a popular Mediterranean getaway, and a treasure trove of Roman, Arab and Islamic history. Discover the home of legendary Carthage on this 10 day journey, which offers the perfect blend of history and relaxation.

The holy city of Kairouan is considered the fourth most important pilgrimage city in Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Pilgrims and non-pilgrims alike flock to the Great Mosque of Sidi-Uqba, which dates back to 670AD. Go on to the Coliseum of El Jem. Africa’s most impressive Roman ruin is second only in size to its counterpart in Rome.

Beachside Tunisia awaits you! Discover why Hammamet is a favourite vacation spot for Europeans. With your time at leisure, relax beside some of the Mediterranean’s clearest waters, or shop for some of Hammamet’s famous jasmine souvenirs. Return to Tunis, where shopping can feel like stepping back in time as you hunt for bargains in souks little changed since the 19th century.

When the Romans razed the Punic city of Carthage in 146BC, it brought an end to a flourishing trade empire. Today’s Carthage is an affluent suburb of Tunis, and the ruins are a major tourist attraction. A visit here will be the highlight of a day that also includes the Medina of Tunis and the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said.

Visit the Berber-speaking community of Matmata, distinctive for its underground troglodyte structures, where some of the locals still live today. Go on to Douz to explore the Sahara, with the option of a camel ride through the desert.

Fans of the film The English Patient will recognize Chott El Jerid, the largest salt pan in Tunisia. You’ll stop here on the way to Tozeur, a large oasis in the desert famous for its date exports. Your last stop before returning to Tunis is Gafsa, once home to a thriving civilization dating back 15,000 years.
