Amazing Experience

Overview

Trip Overview

Begin your Icelandic self-drive experience as soon as you arrive at Keflavik airport. Pick up your car and then drive to the Reykjanes Peninsula to view the geothermal fields and hot springs plus the extraordinary Blue Lagoon located in the midst of black lava flow. The Reykjanes Peninsula and the Blue Lagoon Thermal Spa are located 50 kilometres/30 miles from Reykjavik. At the Blue Lagoon you can enjoy a dip in the warm mineral rich waters. Later, head to the village of Hveragerdi located on top of a geothermal area and famous for its greenhouse cultivations. After this, continue to the Grimsborgir luxury apartments for overnight accommodation.

The next morning, head to the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls before entering the beautiful domain of Eyjafjallajokull – a volcano most famous for grounding flights across Europe in 2010! Visitors however are captivated only by its glacier-rich landscape and nearby headlands, which are covered in sea birds and puffins. Stay in Vik in this neighborhood for the next 3 nights using it as a base for further exploration.

The next day drive to the Thjorsardalur Valley with its sharp contrasting landscapes of birch woods, lava fields, impressive waterfalls and the eye-catching volcano Hekla. Finally reach the impressive Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), a spectacular sight when frozen with its geysers and hot springs.

The following morning brings a visit to Thingvellir National Park, meeting place of Iceland’s ancient parliament. You will visit some of the country’s most picturesque waterfalls and Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver. Afterwards travel via Hvalfjordur fjord or Kaldidalur highland track (4WD needed). Your journey continues to the beautiful Borgarfjordur region and Reykholt, home of the 13th century scholar Snorri Sturluson.

Your final day takes you back to Keflavik airport where your self drive itinerary ends.

Stop by the seafront village of Vik to explore a dramatic stretch of coastline poised between glacier-topped mountains, rugged sea cliffs and black- sand beaches. Dyrholaey is a rocky headland famous in photos for its black lava arch. During the summer, thousands of sea birds and puffins nest here (puffins are generally in Iceland between mid-May and early August)

Then travel via either along scenic Hvalfjorour fjord or the vast Kaldidalur wilderness track (Open June-August, 4WD car needed). Your journey continues to the beautiful Borgarfjorour region and Reykholt, home of the colourful 13th-century chieftain and Saga author Snorri Sturluson. While in the area, you might visit the colourful Viogelmir lava cave or take an exciting ride up Langjokull glacier in a special truck to view a unique ice tunnel and ice cave and see a glacier from the inside out.

Visit two scenic, impressive waterfalls. Hraunfossar, the Lava Falls, appears as though glacial water is bursting through lava formations. The nearby Barnafoss falls has brilliant blue waters. You can’t bathe in these springs, but the nearby Krauma natural geothermal baths uses water from Deildartunguhver combined with cool mountain springs to create the ideal temperature for relaxation.

If you prefer a more nature-influenced hot spring experience, we recommend the Hvammsvik Nature Area in the Whale Fjord region. You can relax in a series of stone lined seaside pools with beautiful views over the sea and Icelandic nature.
